Rare Words Vol. 1 – The book!

kickstarter_blog_progress

With the aid of Kickstarter.com, I’m working towards the goal of having a high quality, full color book collection printed of my drawing blog, Rare Words. Jump on over to the project page on Kickstarter to get involved.

Those who pledge $5, $10, $20, $50, and so on not only receive my immense gratitude, but original artwork, sign books, and everything mailed to them postage paid. The goal is a big one, $6,000, but it can be done! I will post progress here and on my Twitter.

About the project:

Over a year ago I started Rare Words (http://rarewords.org) as a drawing blog to inspire collaboration with my readers. You are encouraged to submit words or a phrase that become the creative starting point for my drawings. I post the finished illustration with the name of the submitter. Response has been so great that I’ve amassed over 175 illustrations and counting.

Rare Words Vol. 1 will collect 100 of the first year drawings in a high-quality, full color collection to be printed in the US and limited to only 1,000 copies.

Rare Words is truly run by the readers and the printing of the book will be as well. In the spirit of collaboration I’m asking you to consider supporting what would hopefully be the first volume of many.

Please pass this along to friends. Thanks!

Handle With Care

handlewithcare

I have work in the “Handle With Care” comic art show at the Antonin Perbosc Library in France. Laurent Parson is the curator and by the looks of the video, did a great job. Look closely and you’ll see The Lucky Ones, Show Off, a Noose page, and a bunch of Rare Words originals.

Rare Words process

I’ve been doing the Rare Words blog now for only about 2 months and in that time have done about 50 drawings. The response has been fantastic and it’s become the collaboration I had been hoping it would. I thought I would show a bit of the process behind one of my favorite submissions.

Trisha Alaniz submitted the phrase “relatively unscathed.” I begin each drawing in my sketchbook doing very small, loose thumbnails. If I find myself laboring over a drawing, a move onto the next one and will revisit it later. My first thoughts were to show some bodily harm that leaves the person still functioning (as you see from the 1 legged guy and the other split in half), but then the idea of a natural occurrence like a downed tree popped into my head driving home. Those doodles were done while driving and not looking down at the page!

I then pencil (again very loosely) onto a sheet of 9 x 12 watercolor paper. I knew I was going to ink this with a brush so I wanted the soft edges and dry brush effect that watercolor paper can give.

I scan the page in without erasing the pencils and as a grayscale image to retain the uneven blacks in the drawing. With all of the drawings, it’s been a goal to not be too precious with each drawing and to act on first instincts. While each drawing is colored in Photoshop, I used only flat colors and no textures that were not present in the drawing to begin with (ie. no fake backgrounds, gradients, etc.). I love the muted color palette in the finished piece.

Rare Words has a new feed

survival

I just converted the Rare Words blog over to Wordpress this weekend. It looks exactly the same as before, but works oh so much better. If you subscribed to the RSS feed, that address has changed. The new feed address is: http://www.rarewords.org/feed/.
